What is Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR)?

GPR is a nondestructive, geophysical method that employs radar pulses to image the subsurface. This technique is invaluable for utility locating services, as it allows for the detection of hidden objects without disturbing the ground.

Ground-penetrating radar uses radio waves to non-destructively scan below the hard concrete surface. A GPR system analyzes the radar waveforms reflected from subsurface objects. GPR georadar detects objects within concrete such as pipes, rebar, conduits, wire mesh, and post-tension cables.

How is GPR Used?

  • Detection of Subsurface Objects: GPR can identify various elements beneath the surface, including pipes and cables, essential for safely planning construction or excavation projects.
  • Material Property Changes: It can also detect changes in material properties, providing critical data for assessing soil conditions or the integrity of existing structures.
  • Voids and Cracks: Locating voids and cracks is another crucial application, helping to prevent potential structural failures.

By combining the detailed imaging capabilities of GPR with its nondestructive nature, this technology proves to be a powerful tool in utility locating services, ensuring accuracy and safety in numerous applications.
